Evaluation Part 5 - How did you use new media technologies in the research, planning and construction and evaluation stages?
Research Stages
YOUTUBE
The way in which we used YouTube to plan for our music video was by watching a variety of music videos to understand the different types of music videos. We found that there are three types of music videos that consist of performance, surreal and conceptual. We also used YouTube to investigate the different genres of music videos and which one we would choose to use in our music video. After looking at multiple music videos of all genres we came to a decision to use the rap genre and a performance type music video. Youtube was especially useful in the sense that we could gain inspiration from music videos by other artists who perform in the same genre as out intended artist as to what type of camera language to use and what kinds of angles best portray our artist in the way that we wanted to portray him.
SMARTPHONES
With the proliferation of smartphones in modern society it was extremely quick and simple to use them in order to perform a variety of tasks. We were able to use YouTube apps on our phones, google, emails and blogger apps to research music videos, get into contact with our artist in order to gain a better understanding of our artist and music videos. They are extremely convenient too because they are usually always on our persons and we were able to work flexibly within out own means. This ensured that no weren't wasting time and doing research and planning whenever we could.
BLOGGER
Blogger is the culmination of all our music video research. We recorded our findings through blog posts on Blogger where we could analyse music video posters, digi-packs and lyrics. With this deeper understanding of music videos and ancillary products we were able to start planning our music video.
Planning
Whats app
Excel/Powerpoint
Me and my group used Onedrive in order to send important files between one another so that we could all work together in the planning of our music videos so that not just one member of the group had to carry all the weight of the work by themselves. This was also especially useful because we were able to use Onedrive to upload work to our blogger through the use of embedding, so it was actually quite useful.
Construction
Photoshop
Working on the apple mac computers were essential as we don't have any at home within our group and these school provided computers housed all of the necessary programs to create our ancillary products and the creation of our music video such as final cut pro and photoshop. They essentially served as our desks during the construction and planning stages of our work
Production
Camera / Tripod
Although not necessarily being a new media technology they certainly are fundamental. However with technology advancing we were able to benefit from the new technology within the camera such as being able to watch what we recorded straight after to review it and see if we had to record again or not. We were also able to plan out our shots using the rule of thirds function so that we would have less 'dead space' within our music video leading to a poor quality of filming.
Final Cut Pro
Final Cut Pro allowed us to edit our music video which was the most arduous process as we had disagreements over editing and which shots we should use but eventually we came to a decision together. Final Cut Pro also allowed us to include special edit shots such as when the main artist punches the screen of the audience twice and we were able to insert a photo of a cracked screen which are some of the better things we appreciate of our music video. Final Cut Pro also allowed us to easily upload this music video to youtube by clicking the share button which was quick and clean as we needed to show audiences our music video outside of our media classroom.
