Voyeurism Theory

Goodwin's voyeurism theory states that there are often references to female artists looking sexual and provocative way for the entertainment of a male audience. In Shakira's video she is clearly made to appear sexualised with her way of dancing which conform's to Goodwin's theory that audiences gain pleasure (usually sexual) from watching a form of entertainment and the best way in which to achieve this is through sexual implications. Shakira is aware of her effect on specifically male audiences and uses it to her advantage when she does provocative dancing which include shaking her chest or spreading her legs to gain sexual connotations.  

Goodwin's theory doesn't apply so effectively in regards to this music video by Blink 182 as all three band members are running rampant through town completely naked, which logically should be way more provocative because Blink 182 are showing a lot more skin. However it could also be argued that there will be a certain amount of pleasure from female audiences who may enjoy seeing the visuals of the music video. Also the difference in genre of music must be accounted for as pop is generally more sexualised for the sake of sexualisation but a punk rock band like Blink 182 will be more sexualised for a comedic effect than a serious one.

VoyeurismTheory

Green Day's American Idiot uses screen in a screen shots to send their rebellious message to their audience about a government watching their every move. This is a stereotypical punk music video using dark grungy colours to have connotations of a decaying country. The screen in a screen shot is another viewpoint for the audience to perceive the music video as it breaks the fourth wall, making watching the music video through a screen become ironic as the audience become more engaged through this shot.

Mirrors by M2M uses mirror shots as a different perspective for the audience, through this the audience can gain a better understanding of how the music video has a relationship with the lyrics
