Styles and Conventions of Music Videos

Styles and Conventions of Music Videos

Conceptual

This conceptual music video by Twenty One Pilots suits them best because of the message carried on by the music video is perceived as vague. The music video has no clear message or morales and uses mainly strong colours to contrast the environment to show the artist's strong individuality compared to others. Audiences can use this artist and their music to connect with the vague music video to personally identify it against their own vague life. The artists can use the vague meaning of the song to their advantage as audiences can discuss the different theories and feel as though they have participated and fill to their self esteem, boosting their audience's loyalty to the artist.

Animation

This animated music video by MadVillain (MF DOOM) enabled the artist to create this storyline without having to spend a lot of money with actually producing the animated visuals in real life. Because the music video is also fairly simple it was probably quicker to make than a live music video for the song. Also because it is animated in a 90's comic book style the artists' target audience of older males will be able to relate to the video and personally identify with it. Also the use of a 90's comic book strip allows for more creative transitions between shots that is plausible in an animation but not a live action music video so animation suits it better.

Narrative

Escape Artist by The Zolas is a narrative music video about the escape and aspiration of a young transvestite. Because this music video is narrative and therefor tells story to the video audiences are more likely to be able to understand the message easier as it's not conceptual so not vague but taken more seriously than a animated music video. The genre of the indie music identifies with the song as it's very low key and strong on the vocals. The audience is filled with self esteem once they figure out the meaning behind the song letting them gain a feeling of self satisfaction

Surrealism

Dark Again by The Godfields is a surreal music video where the video is abstract and there is no clear meaning within the video or song. This artist was able to display their creativity  using mainly only two colours of black and white within their music video to show their distinct uniqueness and separation compared to mainstream artists. Also much like conceptual music videos the message of the video is very open to question and can be discusses by the audience but it would appear there is no clear message to the video. The Artist is able to give their own personal taste to the music video as to how they want to be perceived by their audience also as their video represents their flavour.

Interpretative

This interpretative music video by The Lonely Island featuring Rihanna fits their humour genre of music fits the artist as the music is not meant to be taken in a serious way. Rihanna's exhibitionism adds to the music video's appeal as the audience can use it for The Male Gaze. The music video's humour stays true to the artist's style of music as it entertains the audience through slapstick comedy to keep the audience engaged.
Performance

Twenty One Pilots's Car Radio is a fusion of performance and conceptualism and allows the audience to see the hype and excitement of the audience and are able to transfer their excitement and interest into their own. The audience are also able to see that the artist is a centre of interest to show that they do have a lot of fans and are relevant to today's music standards. The artists' use of intertextuality of using a ski mask to preform

Parody

Weird Al Yankovic is well known for his parody music videos of well known for his parody music videos. These music videos are use for the audience's humour and entertainment and rarely have meanings or morals to pass onto the audience. The music video is clearly poking fun at the original, Michael Jackson's Bad music video.

Cameo

Giving Up The Gun by Vampire Weekend features cameos from various celebrities ranging from movie actors to other music artists. This is effective because it can open up the audience range from the celebrities' own fans. It also creates excitement for the audience to recognise different celebrities within a music video and fills a feeling of satisfaction for the audience because they feel smarter and feel like they contributed.
